Week 4 Workshop (Territorial Acquisition Game Design)

In this week we are creating a territorial acquisition themed board game.  The game is about two kingdom trying to defeat each other.  This game can only be played with two player.

The game start with each player flipping a coin or other method to decide the order of turn.  Each turn a player can only move his troops to one base now each base is filled with 50 soldiers. Now every time a player take that spot he will get additional 50 troops. Each player will start with 100 troops, and in order to destroy the enemy base they need to at least have 250 troops. Now, the thing is that each player don't know which area has been taken by the other player and how many troops are stationed there. Should the troop defending the area have higher number than the attacking troops then  the attack obviously failed. Now what happen, when the player loses a base, the original 50 troops that were in that area are given to the attacking player and the area is his. Player can't just attack anywhere they want, it must be within reach of their nearest base. So in order to attack, you need to make a clear path to the enemy base.

Week 9 Workshop (Puzzle Game Design)

In this week we are to create a puzzle themed board games. the idea for our games was that the player have to get out of the prison using whatever resources he can get from his room, with an exception that player will be help by an anonymous message containing certain tools.

At the start of the game player will be given an instruction to get out of the prison. Player will also be given a knife and a rock. The player are free to do whatever they want with the object and tools that they got and try to escape, but be careful as there is a guard nearby. Now the solution is that the player can try to torn the bed and take the spring to make some sort of grabbing stick using the knife and then wait for the guard to sleep/ leave and then take the key or they can try to attract the guard maybe by clogging the toilet or pretend to be sick or any ways that you think will make the guard rush into your cell and you can just kill him with your knife.

Say if you think that was too easy, then you can try to make it harder by saying that the tools are not there and you only have your bed mirror and the toilet in your cell. You can try to figure how to either stole the key or kill the guard, the player are free to imagine any possible way to escape as long as it is still logical.

Week 8 Workshop (RPG Game Design)

In this week we are creating an RPG game. We took the combat system from the M20 rulebook as well as the stat the character will used. We are making a map with 5 different terrain with each terrain having their own unique quest and surprise in them. All the terrain have different level of creatures to encounter but the forest which is the first starting area are generally easier than the others. Player movement will be determined by their dexterity and armor type the higher the dexterity the faster you can travel. And the heavier your armor type the slower you can travel.
The player will start at the town, the town is basically the place where you will get most of your quest, and turn them in. of course there will quest that will come up when you do another quest. At first you will mostly do gathering quest and easy hunting quest. But as you progress you will be send to kill bandits and more tougher opponent. When you've done all the main quest in the starting area you will be send to the dessert
and help a village that is under siege by bandits and finally the main objective is to slay the dragon in the volcano, which is the hardest terrain.

Week 5-6 Workshop (Microlite20 RPG Games)

In this week we are going to play an RPG game, a game called Microlite 20. It is quite confusing for me, especially when we try to create character. We need to define the race and classes. Each race have their own advantage. Our attack and HP also depends on dice roll, but it is bad that i always get a low number. For the quest, the lecture have provide us with "The Bandit Chief" quest that requires one GM and 2 players, which i cannot complete, because my character have already die before it reach the final stage.

Using A.G.E framework, in the action side, since we only play one quest at a time, i can only said that player can attack by rolling a die and to choose item they want to use on battle. Because the quest is about defeating monster. Maybe in other quest, player may be able to talk to the NPC which may result another story. For the gameplay, the main purpose are usually to complete the given quest. The game master will control the flow of the game, so if a quest about defeating an enemy, you must attack and survive from the battle until you complete the quest.

As for the experience player may encounter excitement at first, because the player do not know the flow of the quest, only the game master know everything. So maybe, there will be some unpredictable encounter that will makes the gameplay more exciting. There is also self-identification, which the player may feel because the player can create the character class and race by themselves, which lead to survival, because to continue the quest, the player will have to encounter battle and survive all the way round so their character will not die (since if the character die, you must create a new character to replace). Survival also links to excitement, also links to pride and joy if we ale to defeat the enemy or complete all the quest given by game master.

Workshop Week 3 (Race to an End)

This week my team mates and I made a game called 100 steps towards Freedom. It is a race to an end game published by Mohitanand, Arjun Angu Velu Rajamanickam, and Dien Thon. The rest is going to be explained on the next paragraph, including the storyline, the rules, and the abilities.
This game is set in a post apocalyptic environment. During the zombie apocalypse where every survivor rush out to the base camp waiting to be rescued, finally the end of the wait has come, a radio broadcast which informed that freedom lies in an evacuation centre hundred steps from the place that they are, which happens to be the last evacuation centre and the last member to reach will not be taken in to it.During the journey the players has to compete with other. The way to the evacuation centre is filled with traps, zombies, supplies and plenty more challenges.
The power ups and power downs includes car, to move 5 steps forward. Spring coil, 2 steps back. Trap, lose one turn. Fog, half the dice. Tomb, respawn at the last checkpoint. The checkpoint. Zombie bite, players have 2 turns to reach the checkpoint, if they are incapable, they have to respawn to the last checkpoint. Infamous: Second Son (2014)

Infamous second son is an action open world game, it is the third game of its series, and this game was developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published exclusively on PlayStation 4 in 2014. This game followed the series as player-controlled protagonist that possess superpower abilities that players can use during the combat. The story is about a teenager named Deslin that encountered a bunch of superpower holders or in this case they call it conduits. Deslin becomes one of them conduits and begins to fight with the DUI’s, it is a government organization objected to destroy all the conduits. The game is full of fun combats, new abilities, engaging NPC’s yet the mission mechanics are repetitive. Player will also have the option to choose between being good conduit or bad conduit by their behavior towards the citizen, enemies, and environment.

This game has one of the beautiful looking game on PS4, it has been refined by adding non-essential features like tagging, more action and abilities from its previous series, but yet it still a new experience overall. On this game other than the essential combat systems, players can actually upgrade their ability by collecting orbs, players can also jump obstacles, fly, sprint, collecting manas which can be found throughout the city by absorbing either light, smoke, fire, and others, choose their abilities throughout the levels between smoke, light, and concrete respectively to be discovered. The extra features is what makes this game fun, players can sprint through building, teleport, transform as a smoke, and many others to be unlocked. The storyline of this game was not the best, it was also not dull, and it was decent. For the basic movement, players can also climb buildings, jump, use plasma weapon from light ability, throw grenades, et cetera. What makes this game so engaging is the options you can choose, you can either be a bad or good conduit, both have their own unique ability, storyline, and an alternate ending. Being a bad conduit is by killing innocent citizens, killing the enemies, destroying items, and neglecting citizens who needs help. Good conduit helps people and capturing the enemies. The boss battle plays a significant role in this game, although it’s a bit repetitive, but every boss battle has their own ability that is beyond what the player has if they don’t upgrade their ability. Overall this game has truly next gen graphics, has a wonderful PhysX particle system graphics engine, beautiful scenery, decent story with side missions, immersive gameplay, and tons of fun actions.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (2007)

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune PlayStation 3 exclusive game published by Naughty Dog in 2007. This game is a wonderful looking third person action adventure game set in a beautiful tropical island jungle. This game is about an iconic treasure hunter Nathan Drake exploring and discovering old artifacts challenged by a puzzle solving riddles, enemies, and plenty more actions.  The hunt turns to be deadly when Nathan Drake becomes stranded or casted on the island and hunted by mercenaries. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake and his companions must fight to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the Island and caves.
This game is one of the few best action adventure game out there, this game has a potential in every aspects, but mostly is on its graphics and storyline. During the journey, you will encounter a enemies in which you have to defeat by having plenty of options to do it, players can either sneak pass them, assassinate them silently, or getting their attention by shooting them. Players can also jump, shimmy, climb ropes, and other acrobatic actions for them to survive and also solving the puzzle. Talking about the puzzle, this game has one of the best puzzle solving mechanics out there, players will have to read artifacts which they will have to refer into a given notebook to understand and actually solve it to continue to the next mission, this game has a linear gameplay, but it has also one of the best if not the best gameplay, it also has breathtaking and beautiful graphics. NPC’s in this character also plays an important role in this game to make the players fell more attached. The combat in this game is one of the appealing features, players can pick up gun, shimmy while shooting, and grabbing people and plenty more hand to hand combat with immersive experience. Ranges of weapons includes, AK-47, pistol, silencer, grenades, rocket launcher, and many more. Players can also ride jet skis. This game is not only about fighting human, this game also has mythical creatures that players will find along the way. Overall, this game is one of the best games I have ever tried due to its actions, storyline, attention to details, soundtrack, and the wonderful graphics it has.

Road Rash: Jailbreak (2000)

Road rash is a game one of its kind, it is a violence action racing game. This game was published by EA Games in 2000, this game was then released in PlayStation One. The lack of storyline made it obvious in this game, the story is about your friend Spaz, he has been jailed, and it's up to you to break him out. In order to do that, you’ll have to join a motorcycle gang and move up through the organization by winning the challenges and races, the game will also include cops and robbers chase, 5 multiplayer modes, about 40 attack combos, ability attacks, 15 bikes, a rock/metal soundtracks to pump up your adrenaline and a very long race with more than 50 places.  This game is all about competition, and race to an end performed by twisted actions which is going to be explained on the next paragraph.
There is not much to talk about this game, but it was a good game on its time. The actions, experience and gameplay about this game will matter a lot more than racing to the end. In the single player mode, you will play as a bike rider as racer and a brawler, you will have to kick, punch, and get weapons to distract or disposition them from their bike, so that they’ll lose. The weapons will include chains, baseball bats and many more, to make this game more interesting, every weapon has its own strength, such as one hit fall, and range.
Players can also jump, get hit by a moving car causing the player to dislocate from the bike, running over pedestrians, wrecked bike, and disturbing yet funny images.  The contrast of this game actually lies on competitiveness, players can have fun by competing with each other, or by working with each other either as a cop or using a sidecar mode.

The Warriors (2005)

The warriors is a fighting slash action game published by Rockstar Games. It was released in Playstation 2 and Xbox on 2005.This game is based on a classical movie launched in 1976, which has almost similar story, but the game has the ability to be a stand-alone, which means players don’t have to see the movie to understand this game. The warriors is a unique brawler game that took place in 1970’s New York City era, specifically in Coney Island, the story is what makes this game stand out from the others. The story of this game is about a street gang called The Warriors, they were accused to killing a city gang leader named Cirus, therefore the warriors must return to their home, which is some kind of a base or headquarter, where every warriors can rendezvous and play games. During the journey, they will have to fight other gang members that are trying to kill them, robbing people for supplies they need to have, surviving from the police, recruiting new team members, and a lot more challenges. The game doesn’t end there, there are also some side missions in which they tried to  convince other gangs that they wasn’t the killer, and they also had to find the real murderer in which they finally found it.

Talking about action, gameplay and experience, this game has it all at its best. In this game, players can choose between the characters in the game, which has their own abilities, the gang is consist of 5 gang members. Players can jump obstacles, sneak, use Molotov, distract enemies, brawl, steal stores, mock people, spray graffities, kick people, smash windows, and a lot more weapons that they can use to protect such as baseball bat, knife, and others. Gameplay elements are mixed into the experience, such as the ability to use spray paint to mark turf or to insult other people. The Warriors' headquarters serves as a hub. From inside, you can train members, doing sit ups, pushups and others to increase the stamina, you can also fight with each other or fight with enemies on a mini game inside there. Completing these actions earn the player points, which count towards unlocking soldiers, arenas and game modes for Rumble Mode, and the game's free-for-all multiplayer mode. The experience that I gain from this game comes from the gameplay and storyline in which you have to survive and discover the real murderer, I felt anger, pride, joy, excitement, sadness, revenge, curiosity, cooperativeness or care, communication, and collecting. This game has the aspects that not most of the game has, I felt connected and aroused, the only problem I see in this game is the lack of features, they could add more challenges, more side missions, tagging challenges, but those are nothing compared to the gameplay and story of this game. Overall this game is one of my favorite and it will always be.

Paperboy (1985)

Paperboy is a classic arcade game that was published by Atari Games in 1985. This game was then introduced in Nintendo Entertainment System, which was a very powerful and popular game on its generation. Paperboy is a game in which basically he has to deliver newspapers to the subscribed house mailboxes, sounds easy enough, think again, there are a lot of frustrating challenges you will encounter during delivering newspapers. This game is not a nice quite bike riding game where you have to deliver to a certain houses, the street is full of hazards like construction workers, chased by a grandma, cars that comes out of nowhere, skateboarders, tornados, weirdly smiling grim reaper, obstacles and the most frustrating of all is the dog, in which when you hit any of those enemies, you will lose one of your life. The newspapers are also limited, so use it wisely, but you can also pick up a bundle of newspapers in the street in which gives you additional supplies. The mechanic in this game is simple, you need to deliver the newspapers to the subscribed houses where you will be notified before the delivering begins, if you miss to deliver in the subscribed houses they will stop subscribing and eventually you will lose the game, but if you manage to deliver the newspaper to every subscribed houses you will gain a new subscriber. To finish this game all you need to do is to have at least one subscriber in seven days of delivering.

This game has some challenges, but it has no variety due to the repetitive and unappealing  graphics even in its generation, annoying background music, same street in seven times in a row gameplay, and  the enemies are also the same, but just arranged in different position to make the game more difficult. Other than that the game is fairly fun but the gameplay is decent, I don’t see this game is one of my favorite the actions are dull, the gameplay is fairly boring, the experience is good on giving goals, but poor due to the lack of story. This game is more of a survival than arcade it has no meaningful story and it points up the clichés.
